Me? Highest DPS? Must be hax

I was just looking into the patch notes for World Of Warcraft, which now allows you to beat down the Lich King, at long last. Besides the fact that every character is improved in many ways, EXCEPT mine, my biggest complaint stems from this direct, convenient update:

Oh! But you have to click to read my whole rant!

“Groups using this (the new dungeon finder) tool will be able to teleport directly to the selected instance. Upon leaving the instance, players will be returned to their original location. If any party members needs to temporarily leave the instance for reagents or repairs, they will have the option to teleport  back to the instance.”

This, and many other features, allows you to basically click, and BAM! Put you into a match-made group, not unlike Halo 3 Or Call Of Duty’s lobby system.

I’m all for just clicking and winning, but where will the convenience end? Why not just have Blizzard run the instance for you while they’re at it?

In all seriousness, what makes playing WoW a unique experience for me is the illusion of playing in a digital world, in a time-frame that matches reality. I like the idea of traveling to meet another player, even if it takes a while. I like the idea of parting ways after losing a roll on my loot, and having to hoof it back to wherever I was before being asked to join a group.

I had more fun leveling up in the old world, just because I didn’t have the ability to fly everywhere, and teleport constantly. I felt there, not sitting on my computer, grinding my 50th bullshit quest for some honorary title that no one but me cares about.

I’m certainly in the minority here, and I’m not nearly at the caliber of some of the players out there, but I certainly see where the old-school player is getting the shaft here, and Blizzard is catering to a more mainstream, impatient crowd.

I can only assume those that aren’t offended at these convenient updates are those that love to play the game, but have less and less time. I understand these needs too, but It seems to me that being resourceful and respectful to other players should get you into a group, not by a click of a button. This brings the asshole players (which are plentiful enough) into groups far easier, including the ones that like you type /y in Orig and beg for gold for their alt.

What about the players that spent time creating a character, knowing they could use their skills to teleport players into an instance? Is that not a slap in the face for them as well? Again, I’m not a pro at this game, but some people out there are, and I doubt I’m all alone on this. Comments?

One Response to “Complaint Filed: Patch notes for WoW. (Really?)”

  1. First, here’s a response from Blizz in a thread on their forums:

“We knew the teleportation aspect in particular was going to be controversial. It was something we discussed over and over again. I think there is definitely a risk that the world feels somehow emptier when you are magically transported to a dungeon instead of having to walk through its entrance.

But then you have to take a step back and ask what is better for the player. Does a player get more out of the wonder and grandeur of stepping into a dungeon — and some of the dungeons are quite epic even from the outside? Or does a player get more out of being able to fight through a dungeon over their lunch hour or after dinner?

We’ve talked about ideas like making you actually discover a dungeon entrance before you can be whisked there. That may be something we do for Cataclysm. I think the BGs definitely feel less like places in the world since transport to them is seamless. Then again, we’ve made a lot of steps to make the game easier and faster to play that can work against realism. Ulduar and Icecrown are full of teleporters while you had to hoof it in dungeons like Molten Core and Ahn’Qiraj. Would a lot of players want to go back to the old way though?”

I don’t disagree, totally. I like the idea of what they are doing with the next expansion: You have to go there first before you can warp there. But lots of games work this way. I would have stopped playing Fallout 3 if I couldn’t warp everywhere after discovering the place. And I did enjoy wandering the wastes!

All in all, I think you have to look at it this way: It solves more problems than it creates. Blizz is notorious for tweaking the game every patch, so I’d expect changes coming soon. But yeah, I like the fact that I could log in at any time now and find a group fast, not wait around for an hour. And I like that when I find the group, I no longer have to wait for the 2 guys on another continent to get there. So… yeah, my thoughts are it’s an overall positive change with some quirks.
