Adding to LocoOnTheSoco’s complaint on Madden 10′s rediculous DLC options, I decided to bust through the cobwebs of my posting history and bust a fat-ass anger nut on DLC in general, particularly on Microsoft’s greedy part, and worse still, YOU, for buying this crap!

More crazy ranting after the break!

It takes a game like Madden 10 to really open your eyes to what dumb asses will buy to “add” to the experience of their existing games. But the problem begins not with giant corperations feeding you this tempting stuff, but for the players that purchase anything to add to their game to begin with.

With the newest addition to XBL’s interface, players are now rating their downloads, from movies to map packs. While this seems like a helpful feature, it’s doubtful that a lot of players that purchase 5kb of data to unlock a versus mode in RE 5 are going to complain afterward; just consider the fanboys of each system bashing the other, after throwing down 400 bucks for it. Of course they won’t complain about their system, they PAID for it. I’m sure there will be exceptions to this rule, like song packs for Rock Band.

That said, there isn’t nearly enough done to boycott the increasing amount of bullshit downloads appearing all over Microsoft’s network. Honestly, games are almost universally becoming 15 bucks for the arcade, when they used to max out at 10. Map packs for Call Of Duty: World At War are in my opinion WAY overpriced: 3 Multiplayer maps for 10 bucks is insane, if you look at it from your own purchase standpoint.

Using CoD: WaW as an example:

The game comes with 13 Multiplayer maps. If we split the game into 2, considering there’s a whole other game to play besides versus, that puts a rough value of each map at 2 dollars and 30 cents apiece.

3 Versus maps (oh, I’m sorry, and an additional zombie map!), totaling 4 at 10 dollars values each DLC at 2 dollars and… shit.. 50 cents a piece.

So it’s a bad example, sue my ass.

The point being, is players should be awarded for purchasing each product, not charged a full rate for expanding their fun with the game. I do understand that people need to get paid for these maps, but the amount of money generated for some of these packs is assumed to be insane.

Not to mention, that cheap or free content increases the flow of the initial product, such as Left 4 Dead. How many copies of that game were sold as a result of it’s free expansion of versus maps, with patching? When Gears O’ War came out with it’s initial map pack, Epic fought Microsoft on a free update of it’s 2 maps, and a measly 400 points for it’s 4 maps released later on.

Guess what happened there? By the time Gears 2 came out, Microsoft has a iron grip on it’s content, and everything is getting charged up peoples asses.

This is, of course, due to the fact that we all buy this shit, no matter the price. We all love these games, and want the experience to not dwindle. But when you keep feeding the cash cow for new clothes for your avatar, you’re not encouraging quality content in the future, or cheap content at that.

What can we do about this? Nothing. People will continue to spend thousands of dollars on DLC they don’t need for years to come. But what YOU can do, is ask yourself: “Should I buy the Nirvana map pack, when the record company held out on Teen Spirit”?

I did, and proudly said FUCK YOU, no Smells Like Teen Spirit, no deal. I spent that money on Evanescence songs and proceeded to cut myself instead.

That’s it for now, just wanted to pop in and note that I’m not dead! Good day all!
